24. 09. 2025  |  Heating

On September 10, 2025, the first meeting of the Energy and Heating task force took place. It followed an initial meeting at the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic (MoE SR), organized to facilitate inter-ministerial cooperation on air protection, initiated by the LIFE IP – Air Quality Improvement project (Populair). The task force’s task is to identify areas beyond the competencies of the environment ministry and develop solutions to improve air quality for the health of Slovak citizens and to comply with international obligations.

Measuring ultrafine particles from local heating sources: How to reduce emissions from households?

In the locations of Gemerská Poloma, Dobšiná, Kozelník, Banská Belá and Banská Štiavnica, informative measurements of air pollution by ultrafine dust particles (UFP) were carried out at the beginning of November 2024. The aim of the measurements was to determine the extent to which heating with solid fuels affects UFP air pollution in selected areas and cities of Slovakia. Measurements focused on household pollution were carried out as part of the Populair project activities in cooperation with the civic association CEPTA.

Back to old habits or how to get firewood

08. 04. 2024  |  Heating

It used to be common in the lowland areas of Slovakia that people procured firewood by cutting willows growing on the banks of streams and brooks. Apart from the shade that the willow trees provided for grazing herds, the dense root system strengthened the banks, but the main benefit of the willows was in the form of wicker and wood. They could be willows, but also hornbeams, oaks, agates or ash trees.
