Protecting more than just the air

28. 11. 2025 Air

In recent days, from November 24 to 26, the international conference Air Protection 2025 was traditionally held in the High Tatras. The event, intended for so-called "air enthusiasts", confirmed the urgency of the problem of air quality in Slovakia and its impact on public health.

The conference was opened by Jozef Škultéty from the Climate Change and Air Protection Section of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, together with Jakub Achrer from the Climate Protection Section of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic and the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee Jozef Mačal. They thanked the participants for their long-standing support and contributions and outlined current topics in the field of air protection, specifically the expected transposition of Directive (EU) 2024/2881 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2024 on ambient air quality and cleaner air in Europe.

The first day of the conference was dedicated to legislation and new challenges in the form of stricter limits for pollutants. The following day, in addition to mobility and the impact of transport on air quality, also included air quality modelling methods. On the last day of the conference, contributions focused primarily on the impact of air quality on health.

Our colleagues Katarína Mičáková and Daniela Pavúková, air quality managers for the Trnava and Bratislava regions, also participated in the conference program with their contribution Transport, air and health: From safe roads to cleaner air. They presented effective measures to improve air quality to the participants, focused on targeted communication with the public. They used the experience from the campaign To school by yourself, implemented within the LIFE IP project Improving air quality (Populair), which confirms that positive motivational tools, community involvement and linking the topic of air with the environment that is close to people can effectively change behavior.
