What does safe commuting to school look like from the students' perspective?

Personal car transport greatly pollutes the air we breathe. Whether students have a short or long commute to school, choosing the right means of transport can have a positive impact on their health and air quality. Students from the Sídlisko II Elementary School in Vranov nad Topľou have seen this for themselves.

In September last year, the Sídlisko II elementary school in Vranov nad Topľou participated in the campaign “Getting to School on Your Own” in which students mapped the streets around the school in detail. They focused mainly on getting to school safely on foot, by bicycle or by scooter.

Students in grades 2 and 8 C then participated in the presentation of the results of the “Getting to School on Your Own” campaign, which took place at the end of April with the participation of our colleagues, Dominik Lejk and František Luterančík – air quality managers for the Prešov Region. They pointed out not only shortcomings, but also highlighted satisfactory and well-maintained parts of the city. They then evaluated a questionnaire in which students and their parents could express their opinions on students’ commuting to school and their safety around the school.

Finally, the guests and students listened to proposals and solutions for completing the infrastructure around the school so that students can safely come to school by bicycle, as the school has built new bicycle shelters with a charging station and enough bicycle racks.
