The Emissions and Biofuels Department presented its work in the field of air quality at this year’s Agrokomplex exhibition as part of the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMI) stand. Among other exhibits, visitors showed particular interest in a new, simple and affordable prototype sensor for measuring particulate matter, developed as part of the LIFE Populair project.
In the field of air quality, the SHMI is involved, among other activities, in monitoring and assessing air pollutants. The Emissions and Biofuels Department carries out various specialist activities related to emissions, including the preparation of emission inventories and projections, as well as the operation of the National Emission Information System. As part of the LIFE Populair project, the Emissions and Biofuels Department experts are also exploring opportunities for low-cost air quality monitoring.
This solution could potentially expand air pollution monitoring beyond the existing network of automatic monitoring stations in the future, particularly thanks to its low cost and ease of use. Visitors had the opportunity to see the prototype in action and discuss its operation and further development directly with the experts.
The project also includes a pilot network of low-cost sensors designed to provide indicative air quality monitoring in so-called high-risk municipalities, where local household heating is a significant source of pollution.
