Prešov region by bike

16. 07. 2024 Mobilita

Did you know that for transportation in a densely populated city, cycling is the fastest mode of transportation within 3 km? Not to mention the health, safety and financial benefits. But this still may not be a reason for sufficient motivation to change daily mobility habits. In order to support motivation in favor of sustainable mobility, the Prešov Region has also created events this year that help citizens understand what they are missing out on by preferring motorized modes of transport.

Bicycle service

This year, the Bicycle Service took place on 26th June. In addition to adjusting brakes, derailleurs, lube, blowing and tightening, attendees learned a lot of useful advice from a bike service expert if they listened carefully.

Bicycle breakfast

The cycling breakfast was held on 7th July at the beginning of the holidays in two places in Prešov. In housing estate 3 and Sekčov housing estate, where fresh fruit, drinks and other goodies were served. A similar event will also take place in September, so that the bicycle is not thrown in the corner after the holidays, but on the contrary is used for commuting to school and work, which is also intended to be motivated by the Bike to School and Work campaign.

Cyclobus

This year too, cyclists in the Prešov Region had the opportunity to use a public transport bus to transport their bicycle to selected locations. Bicycle carriers on buses can transport 6 bicycles. The regions of Spiš, Šariš and Horný Zemplín were covered. There was also the option of transporting the bicycle under the bus on the route Kysak - Svidník.

A fairytale holiday

So that cycle buses are used and cyclists don't have to think about a trip for a long time, a list of locations made for cycle tourism has been prepared. The campaign runs from 6th June to 30th  September, 2024. The map shows 15 interesting cycling routes, which are divided according to the degree of difficulty and intended for recreational as well as experienced cyclists.

How to do that?

All you have to do is follow these three simple steps:

·         pick up your badge at one of the distribution points (badges from 2023 are also valid)

·         visit at least 7 of the 15 locations or cycling events involved in the campaign

·         take a clear photo with the badge at the destination of the event or the photo point of the selected trip send photos to the email dovolenkanabajku@psk.sk

To school and work by bike

After the holiday, you don't have to get off your bike, but continue straight away in the competition, which lasts throughout September. "Bicycle to school and work" is a competition where the winner is an honest cyclist who not only cycles on trips, but also to school or work, thereby improving the air he breathes on the way.

Cycling events To top it all off, there are plenty of other Cycling Events for cyclists, be it meetings, races, foundation support and more. You can find an overview of events on this page.

An interesting event can be the first edition of the Prešovská Cykloburza (on 3th August), where cyclists can buy, sell or exchange various cycling equipment.

Cycling infrastructure Cyclists enjoy the repaired cycle paths in Poloniny. Between Starina and the former village of Ruské, more than 14 kilometers of bicycle paths, as well as seven bridges and dozens of culverts, have undergone reconstruction. The Prešov self-governing region, as the main investor in the Poloniny trail project, invested 7.4 million euros here through its own and European resources. He is also finalizing two other sections in the territory, namely in the direction of Stakčín and between Ulič and Uličský Krivy.

In the new season, 400 km of renewed markings await cyclists in the Prešov region. During the year 2024, another 300 kilometers will be renovated. Renewal of cycle track markings was ensured by the Northeast Slovakia Regional Tourism Organization.
