On January 1, 2020 the LIFE IP – Air Quality Improvement project was launched with a clear vision to improve the air quality in Slovakia by implementing a set of measures dependent on project partners around the country.
Project’s Steering Committee held its first session on April 29, 2020 rather extraordinarily via video call due to the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Internal documents were presented and passed within the session in order to continue with the project.
Despite work restrictions such as prohibition on group gatherings and home office, the project team is successfully executing the action plan. First phase of the project promises to establish a national network of Air Quality Managers, who will counsel state and local authorities on how to plan and implement measures to improve the air quality. Positions are filled within the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, Slovak Environment Agency and self-governing regions (Banská Bystrica, Trenčín, Trnava, Žilina, Prešov, Košice).
A project nickname (a communications title) ‘populair’ was also introduced as well as the project website www.populair.sk
