Eastern Slovakia is also active in sustainable mobility

The topic of sustainable mobility in favor of improving air quality is the subject of a series of workshops organized by the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Environmental Agency and other partners within the LIFE IP - Air Quality Improvement project. The workshop was held in person and was the second such workshop this year on the topic of sustainable mobility and examples of good practice. It took place on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 in Košice, at the TABAČKA KULTURFABRIK cultural center and focused on the Košice and Prešov regions.
The goal of the event was to introduce participants to the issue of sustainable mobility, including planning and implementation of transport with respect to residents, cities and regions. It was also a good opportunity to share experiences and observations in implementing measures and activities in favor of sustainable mobility, and thus improving air quality.
The space was given to four speakers, experts in the field of transport. In the first presentation, the workshop participants learned about the advantages that the integrated transport system within the IDS East brings to public transport passengers. It connects carriers and service providers in public transport in the Košice and Prešov regions in a modern way, thereby increasing comfort and saving time and money for passengers.
Subsequently, the activities of the Prešov Self-Governing Region (PSK) were presented, in which they focused on promoting not only cycling, but also walking. They support citizens in using these modes of transport, not only for recreational or tourist purposes, but also as a common means of transport for individuals. The Prešov Self-Governing Region motivates people with various events, such as providing bicycle service or competitions in the number of kilometers traveled.
In the third contribution, the cycling coordinator of the Košice Self-Governing Region, Viera Štupáková, informed about how the region contributes to changing the traffic behavior of cyclists. She pointed out the suitability of cycling as a way to save time, money and improve physical and mental well-being. She presented various methodologies for evaluating the number of cyclists in cities, and also pointed out that not everyone who can ride a bicycle can also ride it properly. Therefore, it is necessary to educate and improve cycling skills. In addition to building safe cycle routes, events are also prepared aimed at increasing cyclist safety.
The block of lectures was closed by a presentation by the Antik company. This company is known, among other things, for providing shared means of transport – bicycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters, scooters, motorbikes, etc. In the recent past, they have also focused on expanding the charging network for electric means of transport, which has increased the comfort of use and availability of these shared means. They also presented cooperation with public transport providers in Košice and the benefits for users that result from this cooperation.
This was followed by a discussion part of the workshop, where participants shared their experiences and observations. The most frequently mentioned needs were cooperation in planning, supporting and financing measures to improve sustainable mobility. Individual authorities often only follow their own interests and lack a broader perspective. However, it turns out that with honest and persistent work, success will come and together we can achieve an improvement in air quality, also through the use of sustainable mobility.
